Drawing Tips

Draw your life
we have a gift called imagination. Try to draw something that is straight from your mind. Or you could draw anything around you, for example keys, cars, pets or your bottle. Try to pick something that is simple to copy. You’ll improve over time.

 Online lessons
There’s a ton of online lessons whether in written or visual forms. You can find lot of video tutorials on youtube such as speed drawing and tutorials for beginners. You may not catch up entirely of what they did but you will have the idea of how they stroke their pencils and draw.

Drawing lessons
the best way to learn is by face to face lessons. You’ll be straight away taught on how to draw properly and corrected by experts. We learn by mistakes and by mistakes we could improve ourselves.

Motivates yourself
keep yourself motivated and bear in mind that you could draw anything and eventually you will. So, never give up if drawing is your passion.

For instance, I myself, never thought that I could draw a life portraits until I’m 16 and came across a portrait of a tiger and I decided to imitate. And here’s the result
i was terrified to believe that i could make this and i almost think that my hand were possessed

and suddenly i realized that i can do this and started to draw more

and then i want to try out other drawing style

These are my latest drawing

After all, i used to draw like this

one of my earliest drawings- ive started with stick figures when i'm about 5 and then it evolves into anime as im addicted of japanese manga.

i drew anime most of the time until i started to try another drawing style in high school. my drawing style change over time from stick figure- cartoons- landscape- anime- gothic and dark drawings- fashion illustrations- chibi anime-realistic drawing - abstract drawing- and now im thinking of stippling drawing

This quote is one of my motivation and i keep holding on to it
'Everything you can imagine is real'
Pablo Picasso

HOW TO PRESERVE YOUR MASTERPIECE

it is fun to see our drawings improve from time to time, but, papers sometimes could be damaged or the drawings will be worn put. There were couple of methods to prevent this:

 By using fixatives, hairsprays

Fixatives is the most preferable options out of the two as hairsprays will turn the paper into yellow as time goes by and increase the risk of damaging the drawing if used carelessly. Fixatives can be obtained from any stationeries stores.

How to avoid from smudging the drawings

Sometimes excessive charcoal and shadings can smudge your drawing.  You could avoid smudging your drawings by placing paper or tissues beneath your palms while drawing, smudging also can be avoided if you follow the right directions of drawing (lefties-from right to left, right hander’s- left to right)

COMMON BEGINNER'S MISTAKES

Hand positions and directions
for lefties, you should started drawing from right to left and for vice versa for right hander’s. It will avoid you from smudging the drawing as charcoal could easily smudge and reacts with the sweaty hands.

       wrong compositions
Can you detect what has gone wrong in the drawing at the upper side ?

The eyes are misplaced and way down for the hairline and everything is out of places making the portrait resembles some ‘avatar’ character.

right composition

 Stiff figures
we often neglects the angles in drawing, it is important because angles determines how the models lean or resting and their motions. Neglecting angles will cause stiffness and unreal objects.

 Lack of details
we tend to ignore the surrounding of the objects making it appear to be ‘floating’. So, artist had to include some of the environment to make it ‘real’, solid and more grounded.

TYPES OF DRAWING STYLES

Drawing is the basis of all visual arts, so they were divided into several categories 、such as:

Story telling

Consist of story boxes that narrates a story
For example:
anime -a comic book or video cartoon animation with Japanese style. Eg: Naruto, Death Note, Dragon Ball etc

cartoons (a simple drawing showing a subject in a funny way) for example, Spongebob Squarepants, Oggy and The Cockroaches.

Next is comics which is a series of pictures used to tell a story for example, Spiderman, Superman and Iron Man.

Non story telling
Non Story telling consist of several types of drawing styles which are:

figure drawing -drawing of the human body In it’s various shapes and positions

caricature -a picture, imitations or a description of a person or a thing in which certain striking characteristics are exaggerated in order to create comic or grotesque effect

fashion illustrations - is an any illustrations of garments and styles. Widely used in fashion to outline and visualize styles.

gesture drawing -is the representation of the essence of a figure position

portrait - a portrayal of someone’s face in the form of drawing

sketch - a rough or unfinished drawings/ a draft

stick figure-a drawing of human being or animals as a circle and straight line- a character with the least depth and believability.

doodle -a rough drawing or a scribble made absent mindedly. Yet doodle is an art and can be used as decorations.

Types of Drawing Styles Part II

Technical drawing
Drawings were also applied in engineering in architecture under the Technical drawing. it is a detailed and precise drawing of an object. The examples of the drawings are:

Architectural drawing- an architectural design or plan and elevation views of a building structure

Engineering drawing- is a type of technical drawing used to clearly define requirements for engineered items

Plumbing drawing- is a set of symbol applied on architectural design drawings to indicate specific plumbing fittings, fixtures and components.

structural drawing- is a set of plan showing how a building or other structure will be built

Scientific illustrations

Mechanical systems drawing- is a type of technical drawing which show details about mechanical systems for example, heating ventilation and air conditioning

Working drawing- precise drawing of a structure, machine etc of any part of one, as a guide to workers in constructing it.

Archaeological illustrations- is a form of technical illustration that records materials retrieved from archaeological findings

DRAWING TECHNIQUES

Not all of these drawing techniques was suitable for beginner artist, but you will get familiar with these techniques as you get drawn closer to drawing and painting. Artists who were looking forward to varies their drawing style also were welcomed for this list:

Automatic drawing- prioritize the quality and experience of drawing and triggered the logical brain desire to produce something that is accurate. Artist is free from artistic conventions an free to draw their imaginations.

Blind contour drawing- drawing the outline without looking at the original objects, this technique is important to develop hand coordination and improve drawing skills.

Contour drawing- drawing the outline for a drawing based on an objects. This techniques is a form of exercise to improve the precision of the drawing in term of shape, size etc.

Chiaroscuro- the hue of light and shade in a picture. These techniques prioritize the clear tonal contrast which affected the intensity of the drawing. Artists who were familiar with this technique is Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo.

Grisaille -the use of grey/monochrome colour which will emphasize the shape of the objects. The tone values range from dark to light, transparent to opaque and warm to cool.

Hatching- is the use of parallel line which was drawn closely together to create a shade or illusion. This technique depends on the amount of white spaces between the lines or the darkness of the lines which will affect the drawing. Often used in pencil sketching and pen-ink drawing.

Scribble- drawing which consisted of several abstract lines, it will help to improve proportions, expressions and how things blend together.

Stippling- an ink drawing techniques where the texture is consisted of small dots .The depth of the tone and the roughness can be adjusted by varying the density and the distance of the dots.

Crayons - usually used by children but crayons can create fine arts as well.

Dry brush - modern style of painting in which oil painting, bristle and synthetic brushes used on water color paper or fabrics. Black oil is used and 2-3 drops of domestic sewing machine lubricating oil is used as a solvent and it will cause the brush to be dry even after it was dipped in the oil paint.

Rendering for my 3D Animation

When I was in my diploma, i made a project of 3D Animation short film, but not so film actually as accident happened. Just wanna share some of the picture of the film

Prototype plane

So by seeing this, you'll know what the story is about. It's about military kind of thing, a prototype plane, like the one in the picture, self manually modelling, well too bad the concept art picture is missing, hahah. So we go to the next picture

F-14 ready to take off

The scene inside the carrier, the pilot is playing with the Alienware

Conversation between the caption and the pilot

The human or characters are manually rigging, texture, costume, lighting. This is the view on the aircraft carrier, the kind of ship that carries warplane. So, just because this story is about military, doesn't mean all of em are military stuff

The flashback scene at the beach on sunset

The flashback scene, watching fireworks

So the last one is what i love, the detail of the pilot modelling, rendering. It's not too detail as the production quality, but I'm working on to improve

Pilot in cockpit, ready to take off

Interior designing

Doing interior design is also an art. Arranging the furniture and positioning play the role of it. Interior designing can be fun if we love doing it.

Sometimes the client can be an asshole, but it's not our job to complaint, our job is to do, make and finish as what client wants. This is an example of the project that I received, designing a command center with all machine and furniture

I do love doing interior design, it gives me calmness eventhough i'm in stress, but I just don't feel it. Sometimes this was what client wanted, but sometimes they will ask to change it, after they see it, they want to change it back, and that is normal, it's how our world works.

This is the finishing of the design, the interior design of the command center for Petronas

Designing in 3D Modelling

Because this blog is about art, 3D modelling and positioning is also an art. In this post, is about an ice cream vendor that is using a boat concept as their store. A project that i've been assigned to do

This is the ship, the design of the whole ship as the store. For external, positioning table and chair for customer

And these are few examples of details, the tables and chairs position, chiller, cashier machine, back stairs and doors for staff

Art book of film

In a film, they have their concept art for backgrounds, characters, costumes, vehicles, weapons or what-so-ever. Here's an example

For FYP, we need to make this kind of book, with the details of our film, concept art and so on

Here are some examples, the concept art of vehicles, background
